Eating the Ayurvedic way
25. May 2022Weight management and Ayurveda
If you would like to change your weight, you do not need blame or promises of a quick reset. A plan that fits your life and leaves room to enjoy food is a more helpful place to start.
Think long term
For obesity, the usual recommendation is a combination of dietary changes, more movement and changes to everyday habits, with an approach suited to the individual (IQWiG: obesity). We therefore do not present massage or Ayurvedic “cleansing” as a proven way to achieve lasting weight loss.
One small step this week
Perhaps lunch is usually whatever you can grab between appointments. You could prepare something you enjoy on two days this week and set aside a proper break to eat it.
Or you might choose to walk a familiar short route more often. These are ideas to try, not a fixed weight-loss formula or a promise of a particular number on the scales.
Putting the Ayurvedic perspective in context
Ayurveda traditionally considers eating habits and daily rhythms together. This perspective can open up a conversation about habits, but it replaces neither medical assessment nor individually appropriate treatment. For the limitations of the clinical evidence, see NCCIH: Ayurveda.
If your weight, eating or body image is causing you significant distress, speak to a medical professional. Our nutrition section offers additional, practical cooking ideas without rigid rules based on constitutional types.
