15. November 2021Ear, nose and throat care in the colder months
A blocked nose, cough or hoarse voice can soon make the day feel hard work. This article now explains the Ayurvedic perspective without blanket promises that particular spices, oils or treatments prevent colds.
Kapha is a traditional concept
In Ayurveda, mucus and seasonal changes are described partly through the concept of Kapha. This is a traditional framework, not a medical explanation for every ear, nose or throat complaint, and not evidence of weak immunity.
What is realistic when you have a cold?
Many suggested remedies have not been well studied. Some may ease symptoms but do not specifically target cold viruses (IQWiG: relieving a runny nose, cough and sore throat). A warm drink can feel pleasant without being advertised as protection against infection.
Do not experiment with nasal oils
We do not recommend putting ghee or oil into the nose, or inhaling hot steam with essential-oil additives, as general self-treatment. If recurring symptoms lead you to consider a treatment, first ask a doctor to establish what is causing them rather than treating a product name as a diagnosis.
When medical advice matters
Seek medical advice if you have breathing problems, chest pain, or severe or worsening symptoms (IQWiG: the common cold). You will find further, measured suggestions for everyday life in our home remedies for the colder months. They do not replace necessary treatment.
