Hay fever and Ayurveda

When your eyes itch and your nose runs, spring can feel exhausting. If you turn to Ayurveda, you deserve a clear answer, not a promise that an allergy can simply be “cleansed away”.

What happens in hay fever?

Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen: the immune system reacts to substances that are harmless in themselves (IQWiG: hay fever). Describing it simply as “weak immunity” therefore misses the point.

Treatment needs qualified guidance

Treatment options include anti-allergy medicines and, in suitable cases, allergen-specific immunotherapy. A doctor can help establish what is appropriate for you (IQWiG on diagnosis and treatment). Do not stop a prescribed treatment because of advice in a blog.

A practical everyday example

If pollen affects you badly in the evening, washing your hair before bed and keeping windows closed when pollen levels are high are options mentioned by IQWiG in its advice on reducing exposure. Also make a note of when and where symptoms occur so you can describe them more precisely at your appointment.

The limits of Ayurveda here

We do not recommend self-administered enemas, induced vomiting or putting ghee or oil into the nose as a general treatment for allergies. Shortness of breath, wheezing or a persistent cough need medical assessment, as hay fever can also be associated with asthma symptoms (IQWiG: possible symptoms).
