Ideas for Ayurvedic eating
This archive article sets out a traditional approach to daily meals. The timings and rules below reflect the original advice, not requirements that everyone needs to follow.
Daily routines and nutrition
What to eat, and when
Breakfast between 6 am and 9 am
- For example, semolina porridge, oats, rice pudding or amaranth porridge
Lunch between noon and 2 pm
- For example, rice, pasta, quinoa, millet, vegetables, salad and raw vegetables, fruit, dessert, lassi, white meat or fish
Dinner between 6 pm and 7.30 pm
- Vegetable soups, rice, couscous or cooked vegetables
The original general suggestions
- Avoid raw foods in the evening, on the traditional premise that they are difficult to digest.
- Avoid eating between meals; if you feel a little hungry, the article suggested fruit.
- If you are not hungry in the morning, the original advice was to skip breakfast.
- Drink hot water regularly.
These are traditional suggestions to put in context, not universal dietary rules or individual medical advice.
