Walnuts: a versatile ‘superfood’
14. October 2022Store-cupboard essentials for Ayurvedic cooking
Would you like to bring a little more Ayurvedic inspiration into your cooking without reorganising the whole kitchen? Start with a few ingredients you enjoy and use regularly. A simple, well-chosen store cupboard is more useful day to day than shelves full of unfamiliar specialist products.
A few basics to get you started
For your shopping list, we suggest oats or rice, red lentils, a good vegetable oil and a few familiar spices. Add fresh or frozen vegetables, along with fruit to suit the season and your taste.
This gives you a varied, plant-focused selection of grains, pulses, vegetables, fruit, nuts and vegetable oils, in line with the DGE’s recommendations. You do not need a ready-made dosha menu or a long shopping list from a specialist shop.
Turn those basics into lunch
For example, cook some rice and prepare red lentils alongside it with carrot, a little vegetable oil and a small pinch of cumin. If you enjoy the dish, try a different vegetable next time rather than searching for a completely new recipe every day.
Spices for flavour, not treatment
Try unfamiliar spices in small culinary amounts at first. This is about cooking and enjoying food, not putting together your own herbal treatment or treating an illness.
To make planning easier, write down three simple dishes with overlapping ingredients. Find more ideas in Ayurvedic nutrition for everyday life. Any medically necessary dietary requirements take priority over these general cooking suggestions.
